There's a reason leather cord necklaces never go out of style: they're effortless. Light around the neck, tough enough for everyday wear, and they give a pendant that relaxed, masculine look that a metal chain sometimes can't. But leather is a natural material with a memory — store it coiled up in a drawer or a travel bag and it will happily hold that curl. The good news? Leather cord takes a set easily, but it reshapes just as well with gentle heat and moisture, and you almost certainly have everything you need at home.
Why leather cord curls and kinks
Leather is hide, and hide likes to hold whatever shape it's left in. Cord that's been wound tightly, shoved in a pocket, or packed for a trip picks up bends and kinks. Here in the North Queensland humidity, sweat and moisture can soften the leather during the day, and if it then dries in a twisted position, the kink sets in. None of this is damage — it's just the material doing what leather does, and it can be coaxed straight again.
Method 1: The overnight hang (best for mild waves)
For gentle waves and curls, gravity is all you need. Hang the necklace somewhere it can dangle freely and clip a light weight to the end — a couple of clothes pegs or a small pendant is plenty. Leave it for a day or two and the cord will relax straight on its own.
Method 2: The steam method (best for set-in kinks)
For cord that's really taken a set, steam works wonders. Hold the cord over the steam from a kettle for 10 to 20 seconds — just enough to soften it, never long enough to soak it — then pull it gently taut and hold it, or hang it with a small weight clipped to the end, until it cools and dries completely. Leather sets in the shape it dries in, so this effectively resets its memory.

Method 3: The warm damp cloth
Run the cord through a slightly damp, warm cloth while pulling it straight with slow, smooth strokes from one end to the other. The gentle warmth, moisture, and friction relax the fibres and ease out kinks as you go. Then hang it to dry under light tension.
Method 4: The hair dryer on low
For a stubborn kink in one spot, warm the kinked section with a hair dryer on its lowest setting while holding the cord straight, then let it cool under tension. The cool-down is the important part — that's when the new shape sets.
Keep it supple afterwards
Once your cord is straight, a tiny amount of leather conditioner rubbed along it with a soft cloth keeps the leather supple and helps it resist future kinks. Test on a small hidden spot first, use less than you think you need, and wipe off any excess.
What to avoid
Don't soak leather cord, don't use high heat, and never put an iron directly on the leather — all of these can dry it out, stiffen it, or crack it. Keep it away from perfume and harsh chemicals, and don't leave it drying in direct tropical sun. For storage, hang your cords or coil them loosely in wide loops rather than winding them tightly, so the kinks don't come back. After a sweaty day or a session outdoors, give the cord a wipe with a dry cloth before putting it away.

Built to be worn
Quality makes all the difference here: genuine leather straightens beautifully and gets better with age, while cheap bonded or faux cords crack and stay kinked. Our Leather Cord Necklace is genuine leather made for daily wear — and it pairs perfectly with our men's leather range, like the Woven Leather Bracelet, the Braided Leather Bracelet, or the classic Leather Bracelet.
