Gold vermeil (say it "ver-may") is one of jewellery's best-kept secrets. It looks and feels like fine gold jewellery, but what really sets it apart is what's underneath — and if you have sensitive skin, that's the part you'll love most.

What makes vermeil different from ordinary gold plating?

To be called vermeil, a piece has to meet two strict conditions. First, the base must be solid 925 sterling silver — not brass, not copper, not a mystery alloy. Second, the gold layer must be substantial: at least 10 karats and at least 2.5 microns thick, several times thicker than standard gold plating.

So with vermeil, you're wearing precious metal all the way through: real gold on the outside, genuine sterling silver on the inside. There's nowhere for cheap base metals to hide.

Why vermeil suits sensitive and irritable skin

Skin irritation from jewellery almost always comes from base metals like nickel. Because vermeil is gold over sterling silver — two of the most skin-friendly metals there are — it's a beautiful option for anyone whose ears or skin flare up with fashion jewellery. Even as the gold layer slowly wears over many years, what's revealed underneath is still lovely, hypoallergenic-friendly sterling silver, never an itchy surprise.

Quality you can feel

Because the core is solid sterling silver, vermeil has the satisfying weight of fine jewellery — it doesn't feel hollow or tinny like costume pieces. The thick gold layer gives a rich, warm colour that photographs beautifully and holds up to daily wear far better than plated fashion jewellery.

Caring for your vermeil

Vermeil is durable, but the gold layer will thank you for a little care: put pieces on after perfume and sunscreen, rinse and dry them after ocean swims, and store them in a soft pouch away from humidity. Treated kindly, vermeil keeps its glow for years — and the sterling silver heart of the piece lasts a lifetime. The same natural tarnishing that affects silver can be gently polished away if it ever appears at the edges.
